There are very few things in this lifetime that are free. The breath is something that is available to us pretty much on demand, twenty four hours a day. The fact is that too many of us take the process of breathing in and out fro granted and we do not give it much thought or attention. But, if we did start to think about breathing and allow the function of it come into our scope, we would all be affected in a positive way.
Did you know that the breath is the link between mind and body? Most of the time our minds are in thinking mode and we are lost in thought while our body is off doing something else. The famous Vietnamese philosopher Thích Nhất Hạnh would say that in this case the mind and body are not aligned.
Mindful breathing is a fantastic and useful tool that can bring the mind and body back together. Breathing in, you would say to yourself, breathing in. And breathing out, you would say breathing out. Taking all of your attention and refocusing it on your breath can bring you back to the presence of your life.
“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh
